Romans 7:15 I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.
Here’s how it goes: My husband disappoints me. I deal with it by unwrapping my hurt feelings, crunching away my anger, mindlessly eating one chip after another, until I find the bottom of the bag. I know my actions have not addressed the issue with my husband, and I’ve exacerbated other problems. Then I feel like I’ve failed myself and slip into self-hate mode—which sometimes makes me want to grab another bag of chips and slide even further down the shame spiral.
God doesn’t want us to make ourselves miserable when we can’t find ways to be honest with each other and ourselves. What would happen if I picked up a book instead of food or listened to my favorite song for solace? What if we started to look to God to help us understand our actions and respond in new ways?
MOVING FORWARD: What are two or three actions you can take to help you deal with stress in healthy and faith-filled ways?
