SATURDAY, September 9

Psalm 32:1 Happy are they whose transgressions are forgiven, and whose sin is put away!

What does it feel like to be forgiven? Is it like a weight lifted from the chest, a pathway cleared? Is it a soul-cleansing relief that makes us say, “Wow, I’m never going to do that again!” Do we feel forgiveness in our hearts and our bodies?

In the various film depictions of the life of Christ, I’ve always thought the people being forgiven look shocked and confused, but not necessarily happy. I’m sure they must have been happy, or at least come to feel happiness at some point. But in that initial moment of forgiveness, I think they realize what they have been given is as fresh, precious, and fragile as a newborn baby. They have a new chance. They don’t want to mess it up.

We are those people too—stunned and amazed by the way love has changed us so suddenly. Let us be just as careful in our being forgiven, respectful in bearing the new lives God has gently placed in our hands.

MOVING FORWARD: Consider making time to participate in Reconciliation of a Penitent (Confession) with your priest in the next couple of weeks.
