WEDNESDAY, January 1
The Holy Name of Jesus

Galatians 4:7 So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God.

My wife and I enjoy following the British royal family. Their weddings, children, daily lives—we are fascinated by the wealth and privilege we can’t hope to attain in this life.

The reading from Galatians reminds us that we are far wealthier than any royal house. Though we have been slaves to sin and death, Christ undoes those shackles by becoming human, by dwelling within us through the Holy Spirit, and freeing us to overcome this world. This is a richness beyond compare.

In Jesus’ death and resurrection, we are lifted above sin as children of God and heirs to God’s kingdom. We are called to a posture of responsibility and joy far greater than any earthly power. Our work is to accept God’s grace and cease re-shackling ourselves to sin.

MOVING FORWARD: Take a quiet moment today to reflect on being a child of God—and all the riches that carries. Embrace this wealth as you move into the new year.
