Philippians 2:5 Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus.

A dispute has broken out between two leaders of the church in Philippi. Paul does not tell us what the argument is about, but he knows that this clash of wills is causing real wounds within the community.

Perhaps you have experienced something like the argument within the church in Philippi. Allies flock to each side, and with each passing day, reconciliation seems less likely. Soon, the original impasse is forgotten, buried under layers of accusations. Conversation about the original matter becomes impossible. The fight devolves into a competition over authority.

Unity can only be achieved by imitating Jesus the Lord, the ultimate authority on self-giving love and vulnerable leadership. Paul encourages us to strip off the armor of titles and credentials and bids us to turn our minds toward service of—and compassion for—those who stand in opposition to us.

MOVING FORWARD: Are you in disagreement with someone? How can you imitate Jesus with your own practice of self-giving love and vulnerability?
