FRIDAY, November 1                           All Saints’ Day

Ephesians 1:14 This is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God’s own people.

On this principal feast of All Saints, we remember and honor those whose witness to Christ and to the gospel was writ large, of heroic proportions. These are souls that have been purified and made holy and reside in the unfiltered presence of God. It is not without good reason that we see them as being in a different league than we are.

We are heirs of the same fortune: “redemption as God’s own people.” The “this” that begins verse 14 refers back to the previous verse’s mention of being “marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit.” So it is the water of baptism that is “the pledge of our inheritance,” as many of us will sing (Hymn #287) in our worship today, both for us who “feebly struggle” and those of us who “in glory shine.”

MOVING FORWARD: Who are the saints in your life? Thank God for them in your prayers this week.

PRAY for the Dioceses of Rio Grande and Delaware (both in The Episcopal Church), and Kurunegala (Ceylon)
