Psalm 51:13 Give me the joy of your saving help again and sustain me with your bountiful Spirit.
These are also the words spoken by God’s people every Ash Wednesday when we are confronted with the season of Lent. These can be, for us, words of a people who know we are wrong and who desire real change.
This verse in Psalm 51 captures something we often miss when thinking about sin, repentance, and returning to God: Repentance and restoration are ultimately linked to joy. We are the ones who miss out when we do not repent. As we pray Psalm 51, we have an opportunity to join with the psalmist in asking God to restore to us the joy of our salvation.
MOVING FORWARD: Consider committing Psalm 51 to memory.
