MONDAY, March 1                  David of Wales

John 4:27 Just then his disciples came. They were astonished that [Jesus] was speaking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you want?” or, “Why are you speaking with her?”

In this chapter of John, Jesus starts his conversation with the Samaritan woman by talking about her marital situation. However, rather than heaping condemnation after condemnation, Jesus teaches her. He chooses to continue the conversation without dwelling on the differences that could otherwise separate them.

Growing up and to this day, I have been told that I cannot approach Jesus. As a gay man, I am an unforgivable sinner. As a Latino, I cannot bring my culture into the church. As a young man, I cannot speak my mind. But Jesus teaches me to come to him. Jesus invites me into communion, into conversation. Jesus welcomes me, even as people build barriers around the well of life.

I constantly thirst after the Good News, especially when my life continues to storm. My future is unclear, and even my present does not make sense. But I know that on the journey, I can find Jesus, sitting by the well, inviting me to drink the living water.

MOVING FORWARD: What barriers in your life can God help you tear down?
