FRIDAY, July 1

Romans 8:15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, “Abba! Father!”

When I was three years old, two Doberman pinschers set upon my mother and me as we trick or treated. I remember my mother moving like lightning, grabbing and throwing me on top of a closed Dumpster, and proceeding to fight off the dogs with my doll carriage.

I wasn’t afraid of those snarling, snapping beasts. I knew my mother would protect me. I was worried about the doll carriage though. I can remember howling at her not to tear up my carriage, and her howling back for me to be quiet, and stay still.

I think I do the same thing with God. I cry out in fear that I am going to lose a thing that I want, while God is standing between actual danger and me.

God’s love is not a promise of a life free from worry. We may end up sitting on a few trash heaps of confusion, our baby carriages battered while the world rages. But the love of God is perfect and pure and will always protect our hearts.
