Psalm 26:2 Test me O LORD, and try me; examine my heart and my mind.

I don’t know about you, but I’m not very comfortable asking God to test me. In fact, when I look at today’s readings, I am even less comfortable. We hear God’s warning to Solomon concerning what will happen to his children if they fail to keep God’s commandments. James reminds us how many of our brothers and sisters lack daily food. Then Peter loses courage and denies Jesus three times.

Recently, I read about a Christian who was confronted with the impending execution of his children if he didn’t convert to another faith. He said the words of conversion to save his children and prayed that God would know the truth still held within his heart. Such devastating circumstances offer no good choices, and either choice would certainly bring me to my knees with prayers for forgiveness and mercy. Martyrdom, I suspect, may take many forms.

Having heard these stories, I will neither invite trials nor judge others in their times of trial. I will pray, as this father did, for God to “examine my heart and my mind,” and grant me the grace to trust in God’s mercy and love.
