WEDNESDAY, September 1         David Pendleton Oakerhater

1 Kings 10:1b She came to test him with hard questions.

Here we are at the beginning of a new month—and for many of us, the beginning of a new school or ministry year. When my boys each began kindergarten, their teachers created a bulletin board display that featured each student’s picture and an “about me” sentence or two. This helped create a sense of belonging and knowing between the students, the teacher, and the wider school community.

In today’s gospel, we hear Pilate ask Jesus, “Are you the King of the Jews?” In 1 Kings, we read that the queen of Sheba visited Solomon in order “to test him with hard questions,” and in his epistle, James warns us to choose our words with care. The thread through today’s reading is one of words: how we use our words to talk about ourselves, God, and each other matters. Our words, those we speak out loud, those we keep secret within us, and those we text or express online have the power to create or to destroy belonging and community.

MOVING FORWARD: Today, how can you speak words that create belonging instead of division?
