SATURDAY, February 10

Romans 14:13 Let us therefore no longer pass judgment on one another, but resolve instead never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of another.

Before meeting us at the gate of the refugee center, Mohammad was sent away from his home by parents who loved him. Certain their 17-year-old son would be conscripted into the Syrian civil war, his parents sold their family land to pay for his passage by plane, boat, train, and foot. This young man—still a child in so many ways—has lived for eleven months in a trailer in a refugee camp, without family or friends, completely at the mercy of geopolitical bureaucracy and minutiae.

Last summer, our family spent a day with some Episcopalians in Munich, Germany, learning about their ministry with refugees. That day also happened to be the eighteenth birthday of Mohammed, so we invited him to dinner. As we sang Happy Birthday, Mohammed blew out his candles. I wonder if his wish was the same as my prayer.

May the stumbling blocks crumble, and this man find a safe place to call home. May people no longer judge him as terrorist, criminal, or bedraggled refugee, but as an artist, jokester, talented linguist, beloved child of God.

MOVING FORWARD: Visit www.episcopalmigrationministries.org to make a donation to support refugee resettlement.
