MONDAY, February 10                           Scholastica

Genesis 25:23 And the LORD said to [Rebekah], “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples born of you shall be divided; the one shall be stronger than the other, the elder shall serve the younger.”

Isaac and Rebekah’s story is a powerful one, full of drama, adventure, love, heartbreaks, disappointments, challenges, joys, and struggle. My favorite part of their life story is the experience Rebekah has carrying twins. The sons in her womb fight each other from the start. So challenging is the pregnancy that Rebekah wonders how she will manage to stay alive—or if she even wants to.

God calls us to deeper meaning by facing conflict, even when it feels like we’re being torn into pieces. All the best biblical stories call us to trust God in difficult times. Rebekah has two distinct personalities growing within her. Some of us have several more than two, if we’re telling the truth. Her story reveals that conflict is a part of life and that God dwells even in the midst of it.

MOVING FORWARD: Read Genesis 25:19-34, one of our oldest stories about family. How do you feel about it?
