WEDNESDAY, February 10 [Scholastica]

Psalm 81:6 I heard an unfamiliar voice saying, “I eased his shoulder from the burden; his hands were set free from bearing the load.”

Once (okay, more than once), I became overwhelmed with projects: ministries, committees, acts of compassion and mercy, being the perfect teacher and mom. I was practically a saint, except I wasn’t. I was exhausted and tearful. I was short with my family; my lower left eyelid twitched. I couldn’t do it all, and I felt like a failure.

Finally, I prayed, “God, it’s too much, please help me.” The answer I heard in my head was unexpected, which is why I am pretty sure it was God. “Who told you to do all that?” I assumed God wanted me to accomplish everything I had put on my list of expectations for myself. It was all for God, right? Only it wasn’t. I was trying to earn God’s love, which I already had. I was trying to earn respect and admiration from others, and my efforts were backfiring because I was not behaving like someone you would respect or want to emulate. I had no peace. I was disconnected from God and loved ones. I was a mess.

God’s question relieved me of the burdens that weren’t mine.

MOVING FORWARD: Set a timer for ten minutes and listen to God in the silence.
