SUNDAY, March 10                           1 Lent

Romans 10:12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him.

For many years we were members of a neighborhood church with a rapidly growing Afro-Caribbean population. With the influx of West Indian Anglicans, we needed to build a larger space for worship. Our rector sadly told us that the diocesan committee had refused our loan, concerned we were in a “changing neighborhood.”

An Italian-American parishioner shouted, “They can’t do that to us Jamaicans!” And no one laughed, because at that moment we felt such shared identity—how dare they call us a poor investment risk!

Such moments of unity are all too rare in our churches. We struggle with the legacies of racism and xenophobia that seem programmed into our DNA.

And yet—Jesus sees no distinction between us. I am heartened by that long-ago moment in that multi-ethnic congregation when we were all Jamaicans. The building was built, and that parish is a powerful ministry in the community. God is so generous.

MOVING FORWARD: Find a way to commit an act of radical generosity today.
