TUESDAY, March 10

Mark 3:29 Whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit can never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin.

Today we hear the scribes from Jerusalem mistake the Holy Spirit’s work in the life of Jesus as being demonic. The scribes recognize that Jesus must be drawing on great power to perform exorcisms but then gravely misidentify its source. Jesus does not behave as they expect a righteous person to behave. He associates with the wrong people, breaks purity laws, and blasphemes by forgiving sins.

Ever since Jesus has come back from the wilderness speaking about the kingdom of God, he has been at odds with his family and the community’s sociological script. Even one of his closest companions will betray him. Underneath this resistance to Jesus is the truth that the kingdom he proclaims stands opposed to the forces of darkness. To have forgiveness is to turn toward God’s shining light of love.

MOVING FORWARD: When have you been like the scribes in this story? When have you been like Jesus?
