WEDNESDAY, March 10

John 8:12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”

Jesus speaks these familiar words while he is in the temple. I imagine he was surrounded by shiny coins and other valuables, preaching and teaching from a room that would strike greed in even the most reserved of heart.

The glimmer of money has always been seductive. Today, we see greed guiding policies and corporate bottom lines in ways that harm our communities. Farmers, groceries, and restaurants throw away food rather than give it to the hungry. The high cost and high profits of pharmaceutical companies leave people facing horrific choices between buying much-needed medicine and providing shelter for their families.

Jesus preaches that we are to leave behind the darkness and follow the light of love. We must set aside our pursuit of money above all else and walk in the light by loving God, loving our neighbors, and loving ourselves. We may not find a shiny coin at the end of the tunnel, but there will always be the light of life.

MOVING FORWARD: Are you generous with the gifts God has given you?
