John 10:14-15a I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father.

I have so many security codes and personal identification numbers; I can mix them up if I am not careful. Sometimes I feel like these numbers have replaced my actual identity. These codes identify me and are part of the reality of doing business.

Numbers may supply data about us, but they don’t reveal the true identity of a person. Jesus tells us that the Good Shepherd knows us intimately. He knows us by our hearts and souls—he even knows the hairs on our heads. But more importantly, Jesus knows us by our names.

When we know and are known intimately by Jesus, all we say and do bears witness to what is in our hearts. When the Good Shepherd leads us, the One who loves us, forgives us, and marks us as his own embraces and holds us, fully and forever. We are so much more than numbers.
