Deuteronomy 8:5 Know then in your heart that as a parent disciplines a child so the Lord your God disciplines you.
Sometimes it feels like parents have ever-watching eyes, knowing exactly when I am causing trouble or need help before I can say a single word. I can’t tell you the number of times that adults in my life have told me, “You’ll understand when you’re older.” And, most of the time, they were right. As I’ve grown older, I understand more about the complexity of my humanity and that of others.
I imagine God in the history of me—and the now of me and in the future of me—and watchful in the way of a loving parent. And when the feeling comes along that I could have handled something with more kindness or compassion, I remember God’s discipline is to keep me good so that I may enjoy the goodness of eternal love.
MOVING FORWARD: What will you do differently today as you remember that God is watching?
