THURSDAY, June 10                  Ephrem of Nisibis

Luke 19:35b, 37, 39-40 After throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. As he was now approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the deeds of power that they had seen. Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, order your disciples to stop.” He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the stones would shout out.”

Colts, stones, lilies, and sparrows: Jesus can’t seem to stop referring to non-human creation. These references appear all over the Bible. The creatures and components of the physical world are important to God. And why not? God made them, regardless of the many theories about exactly how that happened. Author C.S. Lewis once wrote, “It is to be expected that his creation should be, in the main, unintelligible to us.” The operative prepositional phrase here is “to us.” Despite our microscopes, probes, calipers, test tubes, and core samples, the Maker knows more about what the Maker has made than we do.

On this side of eternity, we will never fully know the relationship God has with non-human creation. Knowing this, our best response to God’s astounding creativity in the physical world is care and humility.

MOVING FORWARD: Consider volunteering at a community garden or shelter.
