Psalm 12:1-2 Help me, Lord, for there is no godly one left; the faithful have vanished from among us. Everyone speaks falsely with his neighbor; with a smooth tongue they speak from a double heart.

Brené Brown researches and writes about vulnerability and shame. She talks about the importance of reaching beyond canned responses when our neighbor is in pain or anguish. That stinks…But it could always be worse, right? Many of us are uncomfortable with vulnerability, so we try to paint a silver lining instead of giving actual comfort or companionship.

This type of response isn’t exactly speaking in falsehoods, but it misses the mark in terms of being in solidarity with and feeling empathy toward your neighbor, connecting with the feelings she shares with you. Empathy is feeling with people, which helps make everyone feel less alone. What makes the things that hurt us feel better is connection with each other and God. Jesus wants more from us in these moments. He wants us to reach out in love, the way we have been reached out to in our hard moments.

MOVING FORWARD: Consider watching or listening to one of Brené Brown’s TED talks on vulnerability or shame.
