SATURDAY, August 10

Mark 9:32 But they did not understand what he was saying and were afraid to ask him.

There is a high level of stress and disorder in our gospel passage. Jesus tells his friends—for the second time—about his impending death and resurrection. They don’t understand, as usual. Despite seeing Jesus’ wondrous powers, despite walking and talking with Jesus intimately, Jesus’ followers are confused. Despite being an observant Jew, Jesus isn’t an orderly guy—at every turn, he upends the political and theological status quo.

Christianity is not a very orderly religion. God is more of an artist than a mathematician—things rarely add up. Our lives of faith are not so much about possessing the truth, exacting certainty, or bending God’s will to our will. Life in Christ—a life in community—asks us to be flexible and open to a bit of miraculous Holy Spirit chaos.

MOVING FORWARD: Have you ever been afraid or intimidated to ask questions about something you didn’t understand? Why or why not?
