TUESDAY, September 10

Philippians 1:12 I want you to know, beloved, that what has happened to me has actually helped to spread the gospel.

The first time I really looked into my spouse’s eyes, I was smitten. I wanted to ask for a kiss, but I was too afraid. We are often more frightened by the possibility of something good happening than the certainty of something bad. It’s the same feeling that leads us to shrug off or deflect compliments rather than simply saying thank you.

Eventually I worked up the courage to have many deep conversations—and even that kiss—with my future spouse, and our relationship has enriched our lives beyond measure. Faith is a lot like that—working up the courage again and again to love Jesus through embracing the world around us. Jesus always returns our love and continually invites us into deeper relationship with him and our neighbors.

MOVING FORWARD: What is your favorite non-biblical love story? How does it mirror God’s love for us?
