SUNDAY, October 11                  19 Pentecost

Isaiah 25:4-5 For you have been a refuge to the poor, a refuge to the needy in their distress, a shelter from the rainstorm and a shade from the heat. When the blast of the ruthless was like a winter rainstorm, the noise of aliens like heat in a dry place, you subdued the heat with the shade of clouds; the song of the ruthless was stilled.

Southern Arizona, where I live, has a similar climate to Isaiah’s time and place. When I read this passage, I thought of our summer temperatures, which top out at more than 110 degrees Fahrenheit, and the microburst (downdraft) that recently tore through our neighborhood, flooding the desert and uprooting trees.

Many of the poor in Isaiah’s day lived outdoors. Mild weather meant they could sleep under trees or in temple porticos, but extreme weather presented all sorts of dangers. No wonder they called upon God to provide refuge and shelter. No wonder the poor and homeless still do.

MOVING FORWARD: Make a donation of umbrellas or raincoats to your local shelter.
