SUNDAY, November 11      25 Pentecost

1 Kings 17:14-15 For thus says the Lord God of Israel: The jar of meal will not be emptied and the jug of oil will not fail until the day that the Lord sends rain on the earth.” She went and did as Elijah said, so that she as well as he and her household ate for many days.

“Taking care of number one” is the first rule of the zero-sum game. If someone else is gaining in success or power or control, then I must be losing. This sounds absolutely stupid when said out loud, and yet whole economic systems are built on the idea that resources and raw materials are finite—there’s only so much to go around.

Sometimes we treat love like a zero-sum game. We love with strings attached, we give with strings attached, and we still try to live as followers of Jesus. Throughout scripture we are confronted with a different way of life—one of self-sacrifice, mercy, and abiding love.

MOVING FORWARD: God does not play a zero-sum game. Should we?
