Luke 15:2 And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, “This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them.”
We overcame our own internal grumbling over liability and risks—hesitations born of the discomfort of being forced to dismantle our privilege. I particularly treasure the memories of sleeping on a camp cot in the middle of our warm, darkened parish hall. The snores of the forty men and a few volunteers reverberated around me as the snow fell in knee-deep drifts outside.
This was a miracle of God’s people coming together, living out loud the faith that we proclaim. We knew what God called us to do. The clarity of that call, reflected in the life of a Christ who welcomed all, shared, and ate with sinners, with outcasts, with the forgotten of society, made it possible.
