WEDNESDAY, December 11

Revelation 2:4 But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.

Does this sound familiar? You’re 110 percent enthusiastic about an idea, research it thoroughly, and start with gusto. Maybe it’s a new workout regimen, a crafting hobby, or a small side business. You dive in, but the energy fizzles.

Faith can be like this. Experiences with God set our hearts on fire for more of the divine. Then the fever of life spikes, and we abandon the clarity and ardor we had for our new beginning. Clergy discuss this quietly among ourselves, remembering the love that drew us toward ordination, admitting how much we miss the intensity and earnestness of our early call.

It is a deep relief to be honest about this kind of longing. When we name it, we’re making the turn back toward God and trusting the promise in Revelation: We can come home again. With God’s grace, we can repent and fall in love again, remembering the first actions and fruits of our call.

MOVING FORWARD: Invite your clergy person to coffee or lunch. Ask how they doing and listen to what they share.
