MONDAY, March 11

Psalm 44:23 Awake, O Lord! why are you sleeping? Arise! do not reject us for ever.

It’s been a rough winter. The world is troubled, and there are messages from friends dealing with difficulties—illnesses and deaths, family crises, disappointing changes—so much grief.

I’ve been fighting colds and allergies and currently have pink eye. My neighborhood coffee shop and my favorite art gallery closed; my daughter has had unexpected difficulty finding a job after her previous position was summarily eliminated.

Does God sleep? I think not. God’s not on our schedule. A wise priest I knew used to say, “God is never late. But God is seldom early.”

It’s reassuring to know that people of faith, the psalmist included, have always experienced times of God’s apparent silence and inaction and trust God’s goodness enough to cry out for answers.

MOVING FORWARD: How does your schedule and God’s schedule differ these days? What can you do to realign them?
