FRIDAY, May 11

Acts 20:29-30 I know that after I have gone, savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. Some even from your own group will come distorting the truth in order to entice the disciples to follow them.

As a child, folk tales fascinated me. One of the stories I loved most was the Pied Piper of Hamelin. As you may remember, the Pied Piper sweeps into town and uses his music to rid a village of rats. But when the townspeople refuse to pay him, he uses that same music to lead the townspeople’s children away, and the children are never heard from again.

In saying goodbye to the Ephesians, Paul warns the community about the danger of Pied Piper characters—savage wolves who will come among them, distorting the truth and leading the faithful astray. Foreseeing how future leaders will sow division in the community, Paul cautions: “Therefore be alert.”

All the way to 2018, Paul’s call to be alert remains wise advice.

MOVING FORWARD: Do you have things or people in your life that might be leading you astray? What can you do to return to the right path?
