SATURDAY, May 11

Luke 5:28 And he got up, left everything, and followed [Jesus].

For a while, I have needed to declutter my closet. Sometimes the stuff we hold onto—clothes, habits, attitudes, perceptions—can block the way for something better and new because our storage is filled up, and the better things won’t fit.

“Come follow me,” Jesus says to the disdained tax collector—and leaving everything behind, the man follows Jesus. Meanwhile, those who stand in judgment argue about Jesus’ unsavory companions and non-traditional practices.

Periodically, our priest switches up the prayers we use in worship so we don’t get too used to them, saying them only by rote. Sometimes we have to switch up the words, adjust our thinking, or even make room in our closets so the good stuff, the God stuff, can get to us and go deeper in us.

MOVING FORWARD: It’s almost summer! Time to clean out those closets and drawers.
