TUESDAY, June 11       Saint Barnabas, Apostle

Matthew 10:16 See, I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.

Jesus warns his disciples that they will go out as “sheep into the midst of wolves,” and he gives them some instruction on how to handle being vulnerable and at risk of bodily harm. Jesus combines wisdom and innocence in ways that enable him to spread the good news effectively. He knows what parables to use and when to use them, and in this wisdom, he avoids the many traps continually put before him.

When we go out into the world and represent our faith, we have to be prepared for a world that is sometimes hostile to Jesus’ message. The Holy Spirit will help us have the wisdom it takes and the strength and ability to always demonstrate with love and grace what it means to preach the gospel.

MOVING FORWARD: In honor of his feast day, do a little research on Barnabas today, and see if you learn anything new.
