Psalm 18:17 He reached down from on high and grasped me; he drew me out of great waters.

I love the imagery here, suggesting a concerned parent who must save a beloved child from drowning. It has a palpable urgency. By his saving grace, God reaches for us in the moments we most need a rescue from the crashing waves and riptides.

My depressive episodes can feel like being lost, adrift in a great big ocean with no shore in sight. As I come out of one, I can usually pinpoint a moment the tides start to turn. It’s not flipping a switch; it’s more like a seed of hope being planted.

These tidal shifts begin after conversations I had with people who really listened to and understood me. Being seen and heard and accepted makes me feel safe and sets the stage for more internal processing and growing. I gain momentum emotionally, and I can confidently say I’ve been lifted up by those acts of love. No matter how loudly the storm blows, Jesus sends comfort and calm.

MOVING FORWARD: Who has had tide-turning conversations with you? Thank them today.
