TUESDAY, January 12 Aelred of Rievaulx

Mark 1:28 At once his fame began to spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee.

Fame spread throughout the land regarding Jesus. And yet, popularity was not at all what he had come to attain or seek. Jesus was continually saying, “This is not about me—this is about the kingdom of heaven and my Father who sent me. See that in me.” Jesus sought out people who were willing to be transformed so that through them might come a new and transformed world.

Jesus’ fame among the people in his community was mostly due to what he could do for them—heal, comfort, proclaim justice, and love them. Far less exciting or headline-worthy was the kind of sacrificial life he was pointing to—a new way of walking in and with the world.
