MONDAY, November 12

Luke 14:16-18a Then Jesus said to him, “Someone gave a great dinner and invited many. At the time for the dinner he sent his slave to say to those who had been invited, ‘Come; for everything is ready now.’ But they all alike began to make excuses.”

A parent once shared with me an edict from her child’s sports coach. The coach required attendance at practice every Sunday morning from March until the end of May. When the parent asked if this included Easter Sunday and Mother’s Day, the coach questioned this parent’s commitment to the child’s success. Can you believe the cheek of that coach?

For better or worse, we live in a world where religious commitment is often seen as a choice among varied options for self-improvement rather than as essential as the air we breathe. As Christians, we no longer fear the lions in the coliseum but rather the opinions and pressures of other parents, coaches, bosses, and even friends.

In the end, it’s still our choice. Our spiritual ancestors made tough decisions in the face of difficult situations. I hope we have the courage to do the same.

MOVING FORWARD: What tough choices are you prepared to make in order to live out your faith?
