WEDNESDAY, February 12

Romans 12:1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.

The message from this section of Paul’s letter to the Christians living in Rome undergirds his belief that a genuine life of love is made up of many broken-hearted moments and miraculous restorations. One reason Romans resonates with so many of us is because we live the same reality as Paul—blemished and beautiful lives proclaiming the gospel of salvation and restoration, steeped in immeasurable love.

How do we ensure that our love is genuine? My wife Kathy says spiritual direction is the key to almost everything. She goes on to say that love is genuine when we discern what is happening in our hearts and open ourselves to the love and wisdom of others.

Christianity has always insisted that the true test of love is our ability to love our enemies. One could say this is the truest test of love: to love those who don’t love us.

MOVING FORWARD: Practice Lectio Divina with our epistle reading today.
