TUESDAY, March 12

Psalm 47:1 Clap your hands, all you peoples; shout to God with a cry of joy.

At a conference I attended, the leader of a gospel choir pointed out that many of us were clapping wrong. In gospel music—as in most African musical traditions and most of today’s popular music—the clap is on the off-beat, not the downbeat. After some practice, I learned to clap correctly. This simple correction has helped me feel the rhythm of music in a better way.

Anthropologists differ about whether hand-clapping to express pleasure or approval or as musical expression is innate or learned. In Latin the words that begin the psalm are: Omnes gentes, plaudite. Plaudite—applause.

Think about it—applauding God! There are certainly times when singing is simply not enough. On the downbeat or the off-beat, put your hands together for the Lord!

MOVING FORWARD: Have you ever learned a new way of doing something you thought you were already good at? How did it change you?
