FRIDAY, April 12

John 11:27 [Martha] said to him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one coming into the world.”

This passage from John reminds me of the late, great Aretha Franklin’s version of “O Mary Don’t You Weep.” The song describes the emotional story of Mary and Martha grieving the loss of Lazarus, disappointed that Jesus was not available to heal him.

When we are faced with the impossible, we must prayerfully consider, “Why amid despair must our faith be jolted by signs and wonders?” Mary and Martha weep over the loss of their brother. In their grief, they forget about the redeeming power of Christ. Jesus reminds them that he is the resurrection and the life, that whoever lives and believes in him will never die—ever.

Today, this is our belief and deepest hope. Death does not ever have the final say. Yes, Lord. We believe.

MOVING FORWARD: Find a way to listen to (and pray with) this song today.
