FRIDAY, June 12                  Enmegahbowh

Matthew 16:24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”

So often, Peter seems be bumbling around, not really understanding what Jesus is saying, sticking his foot in his mouth. Today, as Jesus tells the disciples about the suffering he is about to endure, Peter rebukes him. Jesus is not happy about this and calls Peter a stumbling block and adversary. Peter’s motivations come from a very loving place, but he has no understanding of what Jesus is really saying, what Jesus really means.

How often do we have good motivations and still wind up in a mess? Jesus tells us to follow him. He shows us the way. Some of the things he asks us to do are countercultural and strange—well-intentioned things that our hearts do not comprehend. Jesus walks the path ahead of us so that we can understand what it means to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow him.

MOVING FORWARD: Have you ever, with good or ill intent, been a stumbling block for someone else’s faith? What was it like to realize that? How did you change the situation?
