Matthew 25:29 For to all those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away.

The Baby Alive doll, for those of you not lucky enough to have been little girls in the 1970s, was a battery-operated baby doll that would eat “real” food and then expel it into a diaper by means of a very simple digestive tract. Instructions on care included how to be sure the doll’s insides were clear of all “food.”

As a seven-year-old, I had no interest in cleaning the hidden insides, so my Baby Alive developed a terrible case of diaper rash in the form of mold. Bye-bye, Baby Alive.

This happened twice before my mother discovered it wasn’t the doll that was defective; it was my neglect. And that was that, no more digesting baby doll.

But Barbies? I took such good care of those dolls! And because I loved and cared so much for them, my mother was always happy to add to my collection.

It’s not what we have, but how we care for what we have that makes the difference in what we are given.
