FRIDAY, July 12

Psalm 17:8 Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me under the shadow of your wings.

My terrier Oliver is a little guy. He’s pretty sturdy—he carries himself like a wrestler. He has a mouth on him, too. But even so, I feel the weight of love and the responsibility to keep him healthy and out of harm’s way.

I keep Oliver under the shadow of my wing, protect him from scary sounds and strange people, try to mitigate his stress, and assure him he is always safe with me. Even in my imperfect love, he looks at me with adoration just for being his person.

“Keep me as the apple of your eye,” David pleads. The beauty is that, of course, Oliver is the apple of my eye, and of course, David is the apple of God’s. That parental, fierce, and protective love is a given. It is God’s pleasure to look after David, because David belongs to, and is beloved, by God.

MOVING FORWARD: Think about the person you love most. God loves you even more that you love that person. You are very special and worthy of love.
