SATURDAY, January 13

Psalm 20:1 May the Lord answer you in the day of trouble, the Name of the God of Jacob defend you.

The December night was dark but mild. My wife and I walked the country road near our home. We did this every night, a way to leave our work behind. For a mile, Kim was silent. I wondered what was wrong. “I found a lump here,” she said, putting my hand to her breast. All the stars were swallowed; I shivered in fear.

A dear friend, Sarah Terry, was diagnosed with breast cancer the same week in 1998. Sarah told me about a woman she met during chemotherapy who had been diagnosed with breast cancer but didn’t receive treatment for a year because she was uninsured. Sarah and I had an idea: Establish a fund to save the lives of uninsured people diagnosed with a catastrophic illness. Two months later, the state legislature created Virginia’s Uninsured Medical Catastrophe Fund. It has saved many lives, mostly through treatment for cancer.

We can be God’s loving heart in the world—angels to each other—reaching out in the midst of trouble, turning darkness into light, loving our neighbors and strangers as ourselves.

MOVING FORWARD: Call your senator or representative and let them know your feelings about healthcare.
