SUNDAY, January 13                  1 Epiphany

Acts 8:14 Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them.

Bread making is working its way into my life. I am discovering wonder in warm water and yeast that transforms gooey flour and oil into puffy, pungent mounds of dough. Lots of chemistry occurs in this first rising, with more goodness to come.

In today’s reading from Acts, we witness the ongoing transformation of the people of Samaria. Some in this region have experienced Jesus firsthand, learning about his power from the woman at the well (John 4:1-42). The living water of Jesus quenches thirsty hearts, and many believe. This is their first rising. Peter and John have come to complete the process with a full measure of Holy Spirit, that baking and refining fire.

Faith formation comes through ingredients added over time, mixed in thoroughly, and allowed to develop and grow. May we stay open to God working—and the Holy Spirit rising—in our hearts.

MOVING FORWARD: Make some bread or biscuits this week. Share the fruits of your labor with someone in your life who may need a special treat.
