FRIDAY, April 13

Acts 6:2 And the twelve called together the whole community of the disciples and said, “It is not right that we should neglect the word of God in order to wait on tables.”

I’m comforted in knowing that the apostles can be a little snotty and ungrateful. I have this tendency as well. The daily work of parish ministry can often feel like a distraction from what I perceive to be the real work of church. I want to spend my time sharing the sacraments, doing pastoral care, and taking part in formation, but the parish kitchen needs cleaning, the phone needs answering, and the floor needs sweeping. In those moments of distraction, I can easily slip into ingratitude.

We need to remind ourselves that whatever kind of work God calls us to is a blessing—both in how we do it and in what we do. We should remember—especially in moments of great stress—that God has given us all we need to do what God has asked us to do. Part of that work might be simply opening our eyes to recognize and affirm the meaningful vocations that are being lived out all around us.

MOVING FORWARD: Are you overlooking a gift God has given you or a companion? How will you put that gift to work for the good of God’s kingdom?
