TUESDAY, April 13

1 John 2:9 Whoever says, “I am in the light,” while hating a brother or sister, is still in the darkness.

I still regret a letter I wrote decades ago. A church leader I knew had, in my view, failed to speak out against a particular episode of violence with sufficient vigor. So I dashed off an angry letter, telling him what he should have done and sharing my low opinion of his behavior. It was awful. I was awful.

He wrote back. Rightly, he told me that I was ironically claiming to work against violence, but I was using violent language. I hadn’t been threatening or anything, but he was correct to name my angry letter for what it was. His response was kind. Some years later, I saw him at a meeting, and I was able to apologize, and he was gracious, for which I am grateful.

I wrote the letter thinking I was bearing light, holding up some imagined standard. In fact, I was still in darkness. Thanks be to God that Jesus loves us even when we’re jerks. And thanks be to God that the leader to whom I wrote was in the light and ready to share it.

MOVING FORWARD: The next time you compose an email written in anger, save it as a draft. Are you speaking an important truth or simply lashing out?
