MONDAY, May 13

Luke 6:5 Then he said to them, “The Son of Man is lord of the sabbath.”

Several years ago, my husband and I took our first child-free and schedule-free road trip together. On previous trips with our girls, we flew past signs proclaiming, “Scenic Overlook” but never stopped to enjoy them.

This time, on our own, we veered off the highway and took time to be still and behold the beautiful, to feel awe and gratitude. These rest stops and places of beauty were waiting to surprise and delight us—and anyone who would take the time to stop and witness their majesty.

God makes the sabbath on the seventh day, and invites us—commands us—to take the time to rest and revel, perhaps so that our passions might caress us, bless us, and put life into us rather than squeezing it out.

MOVING FORWARD: What does holy rest look like for you? How will you plan to make your own sabbath holy?
