2 Corinthians 12:8-9a Three times I appealed to the Lord about this, that it would leave me, but he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.”

Paul writes about the thorn in his flesh, which reminds him of his human frailty—but we still aren’t sure what he is talking about. Whatever this “thorn” is, Paul prays to the Lord for it to be taken away, but the answer he wants doesn’t come. God answers Paul’s request the same way God answers so many of our prayers about the burdens we carry: God does not remove the thorn but fortifies Paul (and us) with the strength to bear it.

Hard, awful things happen in this broken world. Nothing we can do will change that fact. Bad things happen, and they will happen to good people we love, or to us. “My grace is sufficient for you” means that we find strength in our faith. God’s sufficient grace and weakness-perfecting power means grace teaches us to see a new picture. Out of pain, suffering, crucifixion, and death comes wonder, glory, and resurrection.

MOVING FORWARD: How has God’s strength helped you bear a burden with grace?
