Numbers 3:5-6 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Bring the tribe of Levi near, and set them before Aaron the priest, so that they may assist him.

God consecrates the tribe of Levi to serve at the tabernacle and later at the temple, set apart forever for holy service. The job of the Levites is to offer sacrifices to the Lord. And the first sacrifice they offer is themselves, their own lives, consecrated to God.

The Christian analogy for this consecration isn’t ordination—it’s baptism. It is the duty of every Christian to offer a living sacrifice to God, just as the Levites offer sacrifices on behalf of the children of Israel before God. As followers of Jesus, we have surrendered our souls and bodies, all that we are, and all that we have, to proclaiming the good news of God in Christ. When we do that over a lifetime, we become less like ourselves and more like Jesus. Thanks be to God.

MOVING FORWARD: Is there something in your life that you’re holding too tightly? How can you consecrate that to God, to use it for something besides yourself?
