Mark 1:16-17 As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me and I will make you fish for people.”

This passage holds significance to me and my fellow Shrine Mont campers. One of the songs in our canon is “Me and Andrew,” which tells this story of Jesus naming his first disciples. As campers, we felt the potency of these words, even if we didn’t entirely understand the depths of our own calls to ministry. We responded to the feeling of being called.

The song helped us sense the stunning vulnerability the disciples show to Jesus by following him. Two fishermen drop their nets and everything they know to follow Jesus. It’s remarkable how quickly their lives change after making that choice. This song has continued to undergird my own life and vocational call. I remember singing this song as a child and the words and feelings come flooding back to me—filling me up and reminding me that Jesus does more in and with our lives than we can ask or imagine.

MOVING FORWARD: How has your life changed since you started following Jesus? Write down some of your memories, and begin writing your own spiritual autobiography.
