MONDAY, July 13

Joshua 2:1 Then Joshua son of Nun sent two men secretly from Shittim as spies, saying, “Go, view the land, especially Jericho.” So they went, and entered the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab, and spent the night there.

The women of the Bible are commendable examples of faith and courage, and none of them present simple stories. Their stories, Rahab’s among them, are testaments to what we can be when we are at our best—merciful, compassionate, and graceful under pressure.

It is a miracle that many of these stories survive. Rahab would have been easy to forget because she is the least of women—a prostitute. And yet, her concern for her family and compassion for strangers compels her to take action to ensure safety for the least of those she knows. Her memory lives on when Matthew recounts her among Jesus’ ancestors.

Rahab’s story is encouragement to everyday people—we all have the capacity for goodness. She reminds us to see others as full people, worthy of dignity, not measured by whether or not society sees them as such. May we go and do likewise.

MOVING FORWARD: Read Rahab’s story today.
