TUESDAY, August 13

Mark 10:14, 16 “Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs.” And he took them up in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them.

The crowds, the Pharisees, the disciples, the parents, the children—everybody wants something from Jesus. The crowds want teachings and healings. The Pharisees want to trap Jesus. The disciples want Jesus to themselves. The parents seek a blessing for their children. As always, Jesus provides the way through the tangle.

Storyteller and shame researcher Brené Brown says humans are “hardwired for connection.” God creates us to be in relationships and as members of communities of blessing. It is God’s intention that relationships endure. It is Jesus’ intention that everyone be welcomed and blessed.

Yes, relationships break and sometimes end. But it is God’s desire that we not be hard-hearted, that we work hard to preserve our unity, and that we welcome one another with the simple authenticity of children. It is God’s desire to embrace all of us, together.

MOVING FORWARD: How is God calling you to deal with family strife? What one step can you take today toward unity?
