FRIDAY, September 13

Psalm 40:12 You are the Lord; do not withhold your compassion from me; let your love and your faithfulness keep me safe forever.

What the psalmist means by “safe” probably isn’t the same as our notion of it. We like to snuggle into our safe life, one without tremendous risk of injury (physical or emotional). We pray for our loved ones to be safe from all harm.

But following Jesus, really following Jesus, isn’t safe. We sometimes have to wade into despair and darkness or travel into hazardous spaces as we challenge unjust systems.

The safety that the psalmist beseeches is one that surpasses our human understanding. We become safe in Jesus’ compassion, boundless love, and supernatural strength—safe to stand up to the powers of this world confidently and without fear.

MOVING FORWARD: Listen to U2’s song “40.” What strands of Psalm 40 can you pick out?
